August Creates Verizon's 2-Way Interactive Paging 
E-Business WEB Site


Verizon, one of the largest Telecoms in the US offers a service where 2-Way messages can be sent to their special pagers.  These can receive text messages, and also reply to them!

This is a very high volume, critical application.  Capacity and reliability are critical requirements.  Like most User Interface Applications, the screens  below are but a small part of the overall system.  The screens can be made easy and intuitive for the user only because of the extensive infrastructure sub-systems running in the background.   Database management, inter-machine communications, error handling and recovery at every step of the way are the real key to the system.

System Technical Information

The primary requirement was extremely fast, reliable, multi-user operation.  For this reason, server-side Java and client-side JavaScript was selected.   It took longer to develop than with other languages, but the performance is extraordinary!    JSP was not utilized because of JSP not being a sufficiently  mature technology, yet.

Extensive logging and tracking systems were implemented.  If a problem should ever occur, it must be diagnosed and corrected immediately.  Such logging and tracking  systems are quite involved to implement, but pay for themselves with higher customer satisfaction and overall maximum system reliability.

    The following is a the Normal Message Entry Screen:
     
    This screen has what you might expect, looking like a small email entry screen.  It does allow sending the same 2-Way Paging message to multiple recipients.

    The 2-Way pagers have a standard reply capability, such as YES, OK, etc.   This allows a 1-Touch reply.

    If you want to provide a unique menu of custom 1-Touch reply responses, you can send the page via the following optional entry screen:
     
    Note that the Menu of Custom Replies can be defined by the caller.   In this case, a Return Receipt was also requested.

    Summary
